Imphal, June 30 2011:
Reacting to news reports published in local newspapers dated June 30, 2011, district Police Ukhrul has refuted the allegation against them charged by the Ukhrul District Alliance for Child Rights in connection with a rape victim.
In a statement issued by the SP Ukhrul district, K Kabib IPS said that they received at around 9.30 pm on June 24 information of the incident in which a man was beaten to death by local people.
As soon as they got the news, a police team rushed there and conducted an inquiry in which they found that the murder was committed by unknown persons in retaliation to an attempt of rape made by the deceased person on a minor girl.
They called for reinforcement of women police to take the victim for a medical check to the District Hospital, Ukhrul.
The team was accompanied by Chairperson of Dungrei Shanao Long and two guardians of the victim.
Police also tried to inform CWC members but they could not be reached at that time.
It also stated that they registered a FIR on the same night at 10 pm and copies were sent to CJM Court Ukhrul, SP Ukhrul and SDPO Ukhrul early in the morning.
It also refuted the charge that they took the girl in their custody at any point of time.
On the next day, the victim along with her local guardians came to the police station for proceeding further tests at RIMS hospital.
On reaching RIMS the medical examinations could not be conducted on the day as the doctor of the department had already left the office and they had to wait till the next morning to conduct the necessary tests.
They were lodged at a hotel in Imphal at the request made by the victim's grandmother in spite of the CWC's requests to take them.
The expenses for all medical treatment and other necessities were borne by the IO of the case.
The girl was given all necessary care and protection from publicity, it added.
Denying the allegations, the statement further stated district police Ukhrul is working closely with CWC Ukhrul and observing all provisions of the Juvenile Justice Act.
