Govt looks at long term steps to control floods

IFCD Minister Letpao Hoakip has said that the State Government will take up necessary measures to eliminate artificial floods due to improper drainage facilities which are common occurrences in Manipur.
He made the statement during a trip with MLA and Parliamentary Secretary (Home) Leishangthem Susindro (Yaima) to various flood affected areas of Khurai Constituency today.
Speaking to media persons, the IFCD Minister said, "A Cabinet meeting held today has agreed to tender Rs 2 crore as emergency relief aid for the flood.
It has furthered notified four division of the Department to work 24 hours to help the people affected by the flood.
Eight large water pumps will be used to drain out the water from the flooded areas" .
He pointed out that with the help of experts, the State Government is planning to use Global Positioning System (GPS) to identify the pattern of the flow of water from high rise areas to low lying areas and wokr out ways to drain water effectively adding that the work will begin as soon as the experts survey the different areas.
Letpao Haokip further promised to distribute essential commodities as relief aid to the affected people and urged the people to cooperate and support the Government's steps to tackle artificial and natural floods.
He said, "The State Government will hold a meeting with all the Ministers concerned in order to identify the areas that are prone to floods and to take up long term preventive measures" .
Letpao Haokip also said that the blockages at Lamboi Khongnangkhong, Waishel Maril, Khurai and Mayang Imphal which drains into Loktak lake would be cleaned using machines.
Speaking to media persons, Khurai Constituency MLA Susindro said that immediate steps would be taken up to ea?e the suffering of the people.
"Some properties may be affected while creating ways to rid the floods caused by improper and inadequate drainage system", he said appealing to the people to think of the greater good.
"It is better to implement a long term solution instead of wasting money and time on temporary measures", he added.
Susindro said that he has also requested the support of Kshetrigao MLA in improving the road condition of Khurai Constituency and the work would begin soon as the weather clears up.
He fiirther said that he would request the department concerned and the State Government to offer every possible aid to ease the people's suffering adding that he would also request the fish farm owners of the constituency to offer their cooperation in public interest.
