State employee sentenced to three years imprisonment

Imphal, January 29 2013:
A State Government employee, who has been found guilty in a fraudulent case, has been sentenced to three years imprisonment along with fine by the Additional Session Judge, Manipur East Court yesterday.
The employee has been identified as W Moyonmi Tangkhul, s/o late W Peter of Phungreitang Village, Ukhrul.
He is a Senior Accountant in the Directorate of Treasury and Accounts.
He was found guilty of withdrawing an excess amount of Rs 2 lakhs when he should be withdrawing only Rs 1,31,718 .
In this connection, Ng Tejkumar, Director Prosecution, told Hueiyen Lanpao that W Moyonmi Tangkhul had withdrawn an amount of Rs 3,31,718 in the name of District Education Officer when he should be actually withdrawing only Rs 1,31,718 .
He manipulated the amount and withdrew it for his own personal gains.
It was done while W Moyonmi Tangkhul was the Treasurer in Ukhrul Sub Treasury Office.
The manipulation came to light when the case was investigated by the Vigilance Department.
Consequently an FIR was lodged on June 11, 1989 .
The Vigilance Department took 19 years to prepare a report on the case.
A charge was framed on December 11, 2002 and the court admitted the case on September 19, 2011 .
Tejkumar further informed that an FIR was registered against W Moyonmi Tangkhul under Section 409,420,460,120 B and 34 of IPC.
After the charge was framed, the charge hearing was conducted under Section 468,477 (A) and 13, Prevention of Corruption Act of IPC.
Altogether 18 persons were presented as witnesses before the court in connection with the case after which the Additional Session Judge of Manipur East Court pronounced him guilty and sentenced him to three years imprisonment along with imposing a fine of Rs 50,000 .
If W Moyonmi Tangkhul cannot pay the fine during his stay in prison, he would be held for another three months in jail, he added.
