Ukhrul, August 27 2018:
In a tragic incident, a minor girl was stung to death yesterday while trying to save her younger brother from wild stinging bees/wasps (Khuipui) at Chingjaroi Khunou (Ngachaphung) village ofUkhrul District.
The deceased girl has been identified as R Nifty Zimik(8) and her younger brother as Shaingam Zimik.
According to the villagers, the two children were plucking wild fruit peach from nearby garden where the nest of giant wild bee (Khuipui) is reared at the tree top for harvesting larvae.
The villagers continued that constant shaking of the tree angered the bee and "Khuipui" stinging bee started to swarm and attacked the children, however the two years old boy was unable to escape from the attacking bees.
To protect her brother from the bee stung, elder sister Nifty covered him with a piece of cloth, said the villager.
On hearing the cry of the children, their paternal uncle rushed and rescued both of them from the attacking wild bees, they added.
However, the elder sister fell unconscious due to the stung of the wild bee.
The family put their best effort to save the life of the poor girl, but due to non-availability of immediate life saving medicine in the village primary health sub-centres, she succumbed to fatal bees stung later.
It might be mentioned that the Tangkhul community has a traditional practice of rearing wild bees in the courtyard or nearby kitchen garden for harvesting bee larvae.
The deceased girl R Nifty Zimik is a daughter of R Verymoon Zimik of Chingjaroi Village under Jessami Sub-division, Ukhrul.
