The Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) scheme was introduced by the Government of India in August 2004.It was later integrated in the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan programme, to provide educational facilities for girls belonging to Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Backward Classes, Minority Communities and families below the poverty line in educationally backward blocks.
The objective of KGBV is to ensure that quality education is feasible and accessible to the girls of disadvantaged groups of society by setting up residential schools with boarding facilities at elementary level.
The State has 11 KGBV (Model 1) functioning in nine districts.
Out of these, Chandel district has three KGBVs while there is one each in the remaining eight districts.
Construction of all the 11 KGBVs have been completed and operational.
At present 1,118 girls are enrolled against 1100 targeted.
Out of the total enrolment 700 girls are Scheduled Tribe (ST), 166 are from other backward classes (OBC), 90 are Scheduled Caste (SC), 48 are Muslim, and 104 girls are from other social backgrounds.
The KGBV schools also have the provision of enrolling children with special needs.
Out of the total enrolment, 31 girls are children with special needs.
Sarva Shiksha Abiyan, State Mission Authority manages KGBVs in the state.
These schools have their respective School Development and Management Committee (SDMC) headed by concerned Deputy Commissioner/Chairman, District Board of Education.
The Committee manages all the day- to- day activities at the school's level.
Activities taken up during 2015-16 .
Orientation cum capacity building of Master Trainers (CRPs, BRCs) of KGBV: The Sarva Shiksha Abhiya, Manipur in convergence with the State Academic Authority, State Council of Educational Research and Training (SCERT) has organised three days Orientation -cum -Capacity Building of Master trainers of KGBVs and Residential Schools at State level.
Faculty from NCERT were Resource Persons for the mentioned programme.
The objective of the programme was to train the Master trainers (CRPs, RPs) who would help in monitoring and supervision of KGBVs and Residential School schemes.
Health Check-Up: .
Health Check-ups for the girls are conducted on regular intervals in collaboration with National Health Mission (NHM).
The mission also provides Medicines like Iron, Folic Acid, Albendazole tablets etc.
to these girls.
Vocational Training: .
Vocational Skills were introduced to these students so as to ensure economic sustainability while they are studying and to inculcate the spirit of learning by themselves in case they are not in position to complete their schooling due to economic or other reasons.
Activities like cross-stitching, knitting, flower making, pickle making, soap making and juice making were taken up in the training.
Self Defence Training: Self Defence Training was also introduced in all the KGBVs in the state.
The main objective of such training programme is to make the girls aware of various gender issues around them.
Experts of self defence taught the girls on how to tackle such issues physically and mentally in their day to day life.
Capacity building: .
Training on capacity building was taken up in the KGBV centres for the teachers as well as the students.
This training imparted the knowledge of moral values, self responsibility, talents and overall personality development to the teachers and students.
