Imphal, January 23 2018:
Taking strong exception to the arrest of their nine colleagues, the All Manipur ASHA Workers Union has decided to launch cease work strike from tomorrow which would be followed by intense modes of agitation at the district level from January 26 .
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, All Manipur ASHA Workers Union member Ningthoujam (O) Memcha said that they would launch cease work strike from tomorrow and intense modes of agitation would be launched from January 26 if no understanding can be reached with the Government by January 25 .
At the invitation of the Health Director for a meeting, 10 members of the union went to meet the Director.
While one member went back early as she had urgent works, the nine members talked with the Director but they were arrested by police on their way home after the meeting.
When Chief Minister N Biren launched the Chief Minister-gi Hakshelgi Tengbang (CMHT) at Khuman Lampak on January 21 in the presence of Health Minister L Jayantakumar, many members of the union attended the same programme and they submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister, Memcha said.
"Even though we were invited by the officials, we were treated with contempt and utter disrespect as testified by the way eatables were thrown to us", she continued.
Anguished by such ill-treatment, the ASHAs spontaneously made a bonfire out of the shirts and caps distributed to them, Memcha said.
Meanwhile urban ASHA workers have pledged support to the agitation of their colleagues.
