Shaphee Lanphee Day observed

Imphal, December 19 2024: The 13 th Shaphee Lanphee Day was observed today at the residence of Maisnam Lalini Devi in Wangkhei Yonglan Leirak, Imphal East district.

Speaking on the occasion as the chief guest, Janata Dal (United), Manipur State Unit, vice president (organization, Maisnam Dorendro Singh said that Shaphee Lanphee is a rare traditional handwoven textile fabric of Manipur embroidered with meaningful motifs.

He also reiterated the importance of supporting the weavers to promote the unique handloom products of Manipur.

Maisnam Lalini Devi said that Shaphee Lanphee Day is observed every year in remembrance of the registration for Geographical Indication (GI) Tag on December 19, 2011 .

She asserted that she has been working for many years to preserve and promote the dying art of Shaphee Lanphee, which she learned from her mother.

Lalini Devi also shared that Shaphee Lanphee has 10 patterns with every embroidered motif carrying a deeper significance or a narrative to tell.

Presentation of "Shrimati Phamdon Ningol Maisnam Ongbi Keinahanbi Devi Memorial Shaphee Lanphee Award, 2024" to artisans/weavers was the main highlight of the event.
