The 45th foundation day of Jawaharlal Nehru University Post Graduate Centre, now Manipur -University, was held today at the site where its foundation stone was laid inside MU campus.
" The event was organised by Pangal Political Forum (PPF) Manipur and Manipur Muslim Students Welfare Association, MU.
Floral tributes were paid at the site where former Chief Minister Md Alimuddin laid the foundation stone.
Veteran politician Okram Joy, PPF Manipur president Md Azizul Haque, chief advisor AR Khan, ex-Min-ister K Tomba and UCM's HRD secretary BM Yaima attended the event as chief guest, president and guests of honour respectively.
Speaking at the event, PPF Manipur spokesperson MI Khan said that in the year 1972, Md Alimuddin laid the foundation stone for the JNU PG Centre.
On June 5, 1980, it became Manipur University and on October 13, 2005, it became a Central University.
He conveyed that PPF Manipur is not a political party but a CSO set up primarily to address issues and problems faced by Meitei Pangal community.
MI Khan further pointed out that MU authority gave approval for observing the foundation day inside the university's campus in the previous years but they did not give permission for today's function.
He also said that PPF Manipur has submitted a memorandum to the University's authority to name a road or a block of the University after Md Alimuddin.
On the other hand, Okram Joy expressed disappointment at the University's VC and Registrar for refraining from giving approval for the function held today.
He also said that the VC and the Registrar should properly study the history of the University itself to realise the importance of the function.
Joy further pointed out that it should be the MU authorities themselves who should readily organise the programme taking into account its significance and he explained that Md Alimuddin worked tirelessly to establish the university/centre as soon as Manipur gained Statehood.
He narrated that numerous problems arose in the venture ' to establish the Centre but eventually the hard work paid off and Md Alimuddin laid the foundation at the place where the event is held today.
Okram Joy also asked why the VC and the Registrar failed to give permission for the said programme.
