Private Pattas issued against public park

Imphal, June 16 2012:
Along with issuing Pattas in favour some well known individuals, efforts were allegedly being made to construct a market shed over a plot of land popularly known as Green Park, located to the south of Nagaram village and to the north of Dingku Road.
When the matter came to light, people of Nagaram area today pulled down the sign boards and set them on fire.
After conducting a social service to clean up the area in which two MLAs namely MLA of Heingang A/C Nongthombam Biren and MLA of Chingai A/C Preshaw Shimray also participated, the local residents pulled down the signboards and made them a bonfire at around 8 am today.
After the social service camp a public meeting was also organized in the park.
Addressing the meeting, MLA N Biren noted that along with plantation of trees, the Green Park is being developed as a resting place for elderly persons.
The Park area remained as a no man's land till 2004.The area was later declared as a Green Park in accordance to a Gazette of the Manipur government in 2007 .
However, some well known individuals have brought out documents to claim the park area belong to them, which is not acceptable to the people, Biren said, without mentioning the names of the individuals against whom the pattas have been issued.
MLA Biren assured that the Green Park would be preserved and protected for the people and two bridges as well as the retaining wall along Naga Nullah would be constructed.
MLA Preshaw Shimray also decried the attitude of the few well known individuals, who tried to take over the land Green Park.
