Imphal, October 14 2024:
Denouncing the alleged issuance of a "No Objection Certificate" by NSCN-IM for the establishment of a wildlife sanctuary in Zeliangrong ancestral land, the Zeliangrong United Front (ZUF) has informed all concerned to nullify the NOC and authorization letter in the interest of the community and people concerned.
A press release issued by ZUF Media Cell claimed that the NOC was officially issued by Lt Gen Retd VS Atem-VC, Deputy Ato Kilonser of NSCN-IM on August 24, 2024 to Nehemiah Pannmei on behalf of a group of affected landowners for the establishment of Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary.
Further, an authorization letter was served to Lungchaibi Gonmei Kilonser, Zeilad Region to deal with the development of Zeilad Wildlife Sanctuary and for assessing and monitoring the exploration of seismic survey (D-2 & D-3 oil reserve) in Zeilad Region.
ZUF has accused the NSCN-IM of "undue interference in the Zeliangrong traditional property", challenging local indigenous community, overlooking their property rights, disrespecting their ancestral land ownership and the political account of Zeliangrong's historical struggle.
ZUF asserted that no group of few villages or individuals can sell out the common property of the whole community or a part of Nagas' land for shortterm financial gain or in the name of preserving the environment in any part of the region, be it in Nagaland, Manipur or Assam.
It continued to say that the authorization letter served to Luangchaibi Gonmei has also added fuel to the fire that has inflamed the community in the recent past.
In consideration of these factors and the eventuality of bitter consequences that may follow, ZUF has urged all concerned to nullify the "No Objection Certificate" and authorization letter.
It has further suggested the Government to withdraw the planned program and field alternative ideas to preserve and promote community forest and classify eco-friendly zones in consultation with the people of the land.
