Workshop on Thang-Ta held

As an individual project of Kakchingtabam Bhanupriya Devi, under the CFPG scheme of Ministry of Culture, Government of India, a workshop cum production of "The benefits of Manipuri Thang-Ta on women" was held at the auditorium of Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang -Ta Cultural Association , Irilbung, Imphal East today.
Professor H Amujao Sharma, Principal, DSAC Academic Centre, Irilbung, Naoshekpam Rabi Meitei, Pradhan Bamonkampu Gram Panchayat, Th Ibemubi Devi, Manipur State Kala Akademi Awardee, in charge Production Unit, JNMDA, Imphal and K Shanathoiba Sharma, Sangeet Natak Akademi Awardee, director Huyen Lallong Manipur Thang-Ta Cultural Association, Irilbung attended the event as presidium members.
Kakchingtabam Bhanupriya was born at Wangkhem Thoubal and is one of the most talented female artistes of the State in the filed of martial art form Thang-Ta.
She has performed in different places of Manipur and outside State- Assam, Hyderabad, Jharkhand, Kolkata, Chennai, Bangalore, Mysore, Mumbai, Delhi, Port Blair etc.
She is currently engaged as a senior performing artiste and instructor of the Association for Paona Memorial Art and Rural Development Services, Wangkhem, Thoubal.
Speaking at the event, Bhanupriya said that the skills of Thang-Ta such as Hakchang Sajel (physical exercise), Sarit-Sarat (unarmed defensive and offensive skill), Thang Leiteng Haiba, Thanglon and Thangbi etc enable a one especially women to defend self from eminent danger.
With crime against women increasing day-by-day, such a skill comes handy, she said emphasising the importance of the Thang-Ta form of martial art to women.
The art form is not only for men.
Women nowadays are not behind men in other fields also, she said.
