Imphal, February 13 2013: Given the immense social responsibilities shouldered by the medium of Shumang Leela, Chief Minister O Ibobi today announced that the Government will consider extending grant-in-aid to this art form.

Speaking as the chief guest at the prize distribution ceremony of the 9th Shumang Leela Festival at Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen today, the Chief Minister said that the possibility of extending grant-in-aid to Shumang Leela will be considered by the State Government.

The festival was organised by the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council.

Acknowledging the fact that the Council has been organising the festival every year without any financial assistance from the State Government, the Chief Minister said that this has however not deterred the organisers and added that the medium of Shumang Leela has been successfully mirroring the ills of society and offering remedies.

Assuring that steps would be taken up to assist the Manipur State Shumang Leela Council in whatever way it is possible, the Chief Minister further said that the Art and Culture Department would be consulted to see if the Iboyaima Shumang Leela Shanglen and can be allotted to the Council.

MLA K Ranjit who presided over the function said that Shumang Leela is not only unique to Manipur but has been educating the people on all sphere.
