Importance of road safety and following traffic rules stressed at awareness programme

A two-day legal awareness program on traffic rules and regulation commenced at Mini Stadium, Senapati today organised by Senapati District Police and Karong Senapati Town Committee (KSTC).
Addressing the gathering, the District Superintendent of Police, Anupam, IPS highlighted the importance for everyone to be aware of the traffic rules.
He stated that many precious lives have been lost due to traffic related accidents everyday as a result of lack of road safety protocols.
The awareness program was organised with the aim of underscoring that road safety is not only the responsibility of the Traffic Police but also involves pedestrians, drivers etc.
The SP stated that proper traffic regulations can be implemented with cooperation from all quarters and the general public.
While the highway passes through the middle of the town, the SP urged all to obey traffic rules and avoid accidents.
Where traffic management is due in the hill districts other than in the valley, the SP urged all to be aware of traffic rules and follow them while travelling on the road.
The SP then mentioned that strict implementation of traffic rules will soon follow in the district and appealed evryone to follow them to avoid penalty.
Meanwhile, Additional SP (Law & Order), Senapati, Thangkhochon Haokip (MPS) in his address spoke about the Motor Vehicles (Amendment) Act, 2019.Mentioning the different sections given in the Act, Thangkhochon Haokip highlighted the offences and their fines including general offences, disobedience of orders, obstruction and refusal of information, allowing unauthorized person to drive vehicles, offences relating to licenses, driving at excessive speed, driving with use of mobile phone, driving when mentally and physically unfit to drive, racing and trials of speed, using vehicles without registration, without permit, without seat belt, without helmet, not providing way for emergency vehicles like fire services, ambulances, other emergency vehicles, without insurance and causing obstruction to free flow of traffic.
H Timothy Maram, MPS, Addl SP, Senapati spoke about the behaviour and attitude of drivers of a place and how they treat people which determines whether a place or town is developed.
While maintaining that majority of accidents are caused by over speeding, the Addl SP urged all the drivers to reduce their speed to avoid unwanted accidents.
Additionally, DSP B Lunthang Vaiphei in his address stated that majority of the road accidents in Manipur are caused due to negligence and over speeding.
The DSP mentioned that every driver should know the do's and don'ts while on the road to avoid fines while travelling.
Sub Inspector Talu Marcus, who is in charge of district Traffic Unit, stated that most accidents occur between 6 to 9 pm in the evening in the district headquarters.
He sought the cooperation of all to avoid any accident, fine or quarrel between the police and drivers.
While drawing the attention of the drivers, he urged them to read the signs and signals on the road and obey them to avoid fines.
However, intentionally committing the offence and asking for an excuse cannot be forgiven, he said.
All commercial drivers including taxi, DI, sumo, auto, school van and other private vehicle drivers attended the program.
The program is slated to
continue till Wednesday.
