Walkathon marks Legal Services Day

Manipur State Legal Services Authority (MASLSA) celebrated Legal Services Day 2024 by organising a Walkathon from the High Court of Manipur to the office of MASLSA, ADR Centre, Lamphelpat.
According to a release issued by MASLSA, the walkathon was led by Justice Siddharth Mridul, Chief Justice of the High Court of Manipur & Patron-in-Chief, MASLSA and Justice A Bimol Singh, Judge, High Court of Manipur & Executive Chairman, MASLSA.
Judicial officers, members of All Manipur Bar Association (AMBA), High Court of Manipur Bar Association (HCBAM), MASLSA, Legal Aid Defense Counsel System (LADCS) and officials of High Court of Manipur also participated in the walkathon.
While interacting with the media persons, the Chief Justice stated that Legal Services Day is celebrated every year on November 9 all over the country at Centre, State, District and Taluk level.
"It is on this day the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 came into force in 1995.On this day, all the legal services functionaries reaffirm their commitment to provide free legal aid to the weaker sections of the society such as Scheduled Castes/ Scheduled Tribes, women & child, persons with disabilities and persons who are in custody", he added.
He also shared that the walkathon was organised to spread awareness about the availability of free and competent legal aid.
Notably, NALSA has also set up a Toll Free Helpline No 15100 for free legal aid & assistance.
Any person who needs legal aid or legal advice may call up on this number and Retainer Lawyers of every district will be attending the call.
Legal Awareness programmes were also organised in all the district by the District Legal Services Authorities (DLSAs) and a Legal Mobile Van was stationed at strategic locations including Ima Keithel where legal experts interacted with the public providing on-spot legal advice and conducting legal quizzes.
