Residents of Makhan village under Saitu Gamphazol sub-division took out a public rally against the Cabinet decision to acquire 130 acres of "tribal land" for army settlement at the village.
The protestors have urged the relevant authority to repeal and rectify the Cabinet decision.
The rally was flagged off from Makhan Village Church and culminated at Makhan Gate.
Speaking by the sideline of the demonstration, Ab Kailamdinang Abonmai, Village Chief, Makhan (Makhen) Village Authority informed that the decision passed during the Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister N Biren Singh on January 15, 2024 in Chandel to transfer defence land at Koirengei Old Airfield to the State Government coincides with the Cabinet agreeing to transfer 130 acres of land contiguous to Leimakhong Military Station to the Army in exchange for 74.24 acres of land at Koirengei Old Airfield.

The Village Chief claimed that the proposed land is tribal land belonging to the Makhan Liangmai Naga village.
Terming it a "hostile decision by the Cabinet to try to grab the land without the consent of the landowners", he pointed out that the land is the only farmland where the people practice agriculture and its allied activities.
He also recalled that in the past, 87 acres of the village was ceded to Leimakhong Army and no land compensation for the same have been granted till date.
More recently, another 301 acres of village land was acquired by the Manipur Government for Indira Gandhi National Tribal University-Regional Campus, Manipur (IGNTU-RCM).
No monetary compensation has been provided for this land acquisition as well, he alleged.
On behalf of the village, the chief strongly condemned the Cabinet decision and demanded its rectification and repealment.
The rally goers wielded many placards with messages such as "No to forced acquisition, yes to tribal rights", "Land is our identity, not for sale", "My land, my livelihood" and "Protect indigenous land" among others.
