Ukhrul, December 06 2024:
Veterinary and Animal Husbandry minister Khashim Vashum stated that the Phungcham Haofa, an indigenous canine breed, represents more than just Phungcham village or the Tangkhul community; it is a vital component of our state's identity.
Speaking as the chief guest at the 3rd Phungcham Haofa Phanit festival in Phungcham village under the Chingai AC, minister Khashim remarked: "This celebration is not merely for enjoyment, but it holds deep meaning that encompasses the identity of all the people in our state".
He called for all to support the endeavours of Phungcham villagers to promote the native canine breed through hosting of the annual festival under the Phungcham Haofa Lovers' Association (PHLA) .
In a heartfelt appeal, he called upon all meat enthusiasts to refrain from slaughtering and eating Haofa meat.
Instead, he encouraged them to nurture and care for Haofa, allowing it to live a full life and let it die only naturally.
The minister also shared that his department, in collaboration with the Central Agricultural University (CAU) in Imphal, is making every effort to register the Haofa with the National Bureau of Animal Genetic Resources (NBAGR) in Haryana.
"I'm hopeful that the process for registering Haofa as a unique indigenous breed, will be successful," he exuded, adding that once the GI tag is granted to Haofa, it will further aid in promoting and preserving this local canine breed.
Minister Khashim Vashum urged all farmers in the hills to register their cattle under the Veterinary Department's insurance scheme, adding that this will help ensure that farmers receive compensation for any losses incurred due to natural disasters.
In the same way, Khashim, who is also the Minister for Transport, recommended that the public insure their vehicles.
By doing so, individuals can claim compensation in the event of an accident, providing them with financial protection during challenging times.
In his speech, PHLA president Tennoson Pheirey informed that the Phungcham Haofa Lovers' Association was formed on October 10, 2021 and since 2022, the association has been organising the festival to protect, preserve and promote Haofa.
He expressed gratitude to minister Khashim Vashum for unrelenting support to the initiative by sponsoring the festival since its inception.
As part of the festival, Haofa Awards were presented to two dedicated local rearers for their commitment to promoting the breed.
Luckyson Yangya was recognized for rearing his Ruby', the most outstanding female Haofa, while Shangthei Yangya rewarded for his Tiger', the most remarkable male Haofa in the village.
Ukhrul DC Kengoo Zuringla, additional secretary and Veterinary & Animal Husbandry director Hannah Kamei, and joint director of Veterinary Department (Ukhrul and Kamjong) Dr Lois Hongray attended the festival as guests of honour.
Sub-Divisional Officers from Chingai, Ukhrul, and Jessami subdivisions also attended the celebration.
