The 64th observance of Vanamahotsava, a festival of life, a festival of forest, which started as a campaign to save the mother Earth, was held under the auspices of the Department of Forest, Government of Manipur, at Manipur High Court Complex at Chingmeirong here today.
The concept of this great festival for the nature lovers was first initiated by late Kanhaiyalal Maneklal Munshi who is popularly known as KM Munshi, the then Union Minister for Food and Agriculture in the year 1950 .
Today's observance function was attended by Abhay Manohar Sapre, Chief Justice of Manipur High Court and Th Ibobi, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest as Chief Guest and President respectively.
N Kotiswar, Justice of Manipur High Court; Th Ibohal, Advocate General of Manipur; HNK, President of Manipur High Court Bar Association and Meihoubam Rakesh, VP of Manipur High Court Bar Association were also present as Guests of Honour.
Speaking on the occasion, Abhay Manohar Sapre stated that forest is the best friend of human beings.
Without forest, human beings cannot live on this planet even for a second.
As such, in earlier days, human beings even worship forest for good.
He also pointed out the fact that conservation and protection of forest cannot become a reality until and unless all of us come together and do the needful.
It would be useless if one section of the people tries hard to save the forest while another section of the people bend on destroying it.
Article 48 (A) of the Indian Constitution also states that it is the duty of every individual to safeguard forest and wild life, he noted.
Th Ibohal, Advocate General, Manipur, while speaking on the occasion also stated that though there can be no denial of the fact that lots of changes have been brought in the society along with the development in Science and Technology, but the mindset of the general public to save the forest seems to be drifting away day by day.
Not only are the people destroying the forest but are also polluting the water and air.
Delivering the Presidential speech, Th Ibobi stated that we all should be extra cautious while using forest products.
At one point of time, the people in this world were facing problems as the forest area was very large.
But now the people are beginning to face various problems due to the lack of forests.
While pointing out the best possible means to save forest, Th Ibobi observed that we should protect the existing forest area and bring out alternative means to use in place of forest products.
