Womenfolk block road, serve ultimatum to Government

Imphal, November 05 2024: Denouncing the pathetic condition of the Imphal-Yairipok stretch of road from Konung Mamang to Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi, womenfolk blocked the road today.

The shingling of the road with gravel and earthwork were done but the reconstruction work has stopped causing great inconvenience to the commuters and locals, said Wangkhei Keithel Ashangbi Nupi Marup general secretary, Heisnam Sulekha.

While commuters are facing inconvenience, the dust from the road has become a health concern.

If the road reconstruction work is not resumed within 10 days, the road will be blocked indefinitely, she said.

Meanwhile, Wangkhei AC MLA Thangjam Arunkumar has clarified that the work may have been halted due to a change in the nature of the project.

Initially work was initiated to blacktop the road, but a Government programme to construct concrete road instead has halted the work, he said.

The MLA who was attending a programme at Wangkhei AC said the work may have been halted by contractors fearing loss of capital due to the sudden change in the nature of the work/project.

The MLA assured that he will meet the Chief Minister, Works Minister and Chief Engineer to address the issues.
