RTI Week 2024 celebration kicks off

The opening ceremony of Right To Information (RTI) Week 2024 Celebration cum State Level Workshop was held today at the auditorium of Directorate of Information & Public Relations (DIPR) in Nityaipat Chuthek, Imphal.
The week-long celebration was organised by the Manipur Information Commission (MIC) under the sponsorship of the Department of Personnel & Training, Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances & Pensions, Government of India.
The event marked the beginning of a week-long series of activities dedicated to promoting awareness of the RTI Act and its importance in fostering transparency and accountability in governance.
The inaugural function was graced by Th Ibobi Singh, retired Chief Information Commissioner, MIC; Dr Usham Deben Singh, Chairperson, Manipur Pollution Control Board and Koijam Radhashyam Singh, State Chief Information Commissioner, MIC as presidium members.
Speaking on the occasion.
Dr Usham Deben said that RTI Act is a pro-people Act that can help in bringing about good governance.
"The RTI Act was passed in 2005 replacing the Freedom of Information Act, 2002 .
This law empowers Indian citizens to seek any accessible information from a Public Authority and makes the Government and its functionaries more accountable and responsible", he added.
He shared that with proper information about the workings of the Government machinery, people can put forward their grievances and offer suggestions in a fruitful manner.
He also highlighted the role of RTI Act in combating corruption and enhancing public participation in governance.
During the workshop, G Shantikumar Kabui, Joint Secretary, MIC delivered a lecture on the topic, "Section 4 of the RTI Act, 2005 (Pro-active Disclosure) in light of the Supreme Court's Judgment dated August 17,2024, passed in connection with WP (C) No 990 of 2021" while S Inao Singh, Deputy Registrar (Judicial-I), MIC elaborated on "Online RTI portal for e-filing facilities of RTI applications in light of the Supreme Court's Judgment dated October 9,2023, passed in connection with WP (C) No 360 of 2021" .
