Thoubal, September 05 2020:
The Youth Sporting Club (YSC), Khundongbam Leikai, Thoubal in press release sought immediate attention of the Government in conserving Waithou Pat, one of the most important lakes of Manipur, which is also synonymous to the history of Manipur.
The scenic lake, surrounded by hillocks was once home to many birds like Nganu Thangong (Ruddy Shelduck), Uthum (Watercock Gallicrex Cinerea), Urok (Oriental White Ibis), etc, among others, but these birds have disappeared after some individuals started preparing bunds for private rearing of fishes and paddy plantations, it said.
The Club expressed shock at the inaction of the Government in stopping the encroachment of the lake and also the non-functioning of the state Fisheries Department office set up at the lake, which had once initiated some of its fish rearing programmes.
The lake provides various items like water lilies, lotus flowers, seeds, and roots, for sustaining poor families, but once the lake is owned by private individuals, these won't be accessible anymore and it will also cause irreparable damage to the natural beauty of the lake, the press release further added.
