International Day of persons with disabilities observed

Senapati, December 04 2015 :
Senapati Disabled Peoples' Association, Manipur (SDPAM) and Manipur North Economic Development Association, Manipur (MANEDA) in collaboration with RTE-SSA, Senapati jointly observed the International Day of Persons With Disabilities at the Indoor Stadium, Senapati district headquarters under the theme, "Inclusion matter : Access and empowerment for the people of all abilities", our correspondent reports.
The observation was graced by ADC Chairman ML Markson as chief guest, SDC (Judicial) P Duna Dou, as guest of honour, S Ngaoni Joseph, Account Officer, RTE-SSA as president.
A short public rally was held before the beginning of the formal observation at the indoor stadium.
The annual observation of the International day of persons with disabilities was proclaimed in 1992 by the United Nation General Assembly resolution 47/3.The day is marked to promote understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of differently abled persons.
It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of their life and removal of social stigma towards them, Hingba Augustine, General Secretary, SDPAM said in his keynote address.
S Ngaoni Joseph detailed the schemes and benefits available for the disabled.
He also noted that the SSA had proposed establishment of one special residential school for disabled children in the annual work plan and budget (AWP&B) 2016-17 at the district headquarters.
The three sub-theme of this year's observation are, 'Making cities inclusive and accessible for all', 'Improving disability data and statistics,' 'Including persons with invisible disabilities in society and development' .
T Peter Rangnamei, Secretary, MANEDA also attended the observation.
