Imphal, October 02 2018:
The Committee on Promotion of Tarao Community (CPTC) has appealed to the State Government and people of other communities to protect and promote them considering their miniscule number.
Speaking to media persons at Manipur Press Club here today, CPTC secretary S Moses Tarao said that the total population of Tarao community is now hardly 1000.Tarao people live in villages namely Laimanai, Leishokching, Khuringmul and Heikakmul of Chandel district and Sanakeithel of Ukhrul district.
Tarao dialect was declared critically endangered by the UNESCO in 2009.Given their critically low number, the whole Tarao community may be wiped out by the outbreak of any epidemic or natural calamity, Moses Tarao said.
Although there are historical records which say that Tarao community had sizeable population and they shared close relationship with the Meitei community, Moses lamented that the papulation of Tarao community declined alarmingly and suddenly.
Even though their number is critically low and their socio-economic conditions are still backward, Tarao people feel proud to be Manipuris, he said.
Saying that the CPTC was set up with the help of some NGOs, he appealed to the State Government and other communities of the State to protect and promote Tarao community.
