Imphal, June 02 2018:
Terming the vandalization of the office of Registrar and Dean yesterday at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex as unfortunate, the Democratic Students' Alliance of Manipur (DESAM) has asserted that the Central as well as the State Governments should bear all responsibility for the damage.
A press release issued by secretary general of DESAM Sital Oinam stated that alleged attempt to arrest the members of DESAM will not bring an amicable solution to the ongoing issue of the National Sports University.
It hinted that if the State Government genuinely desires to establish the University, then the Govt, while understanding the needs of the people of Manipur, should pressure the Central Govt to base the related courses of the university in the State first, which is also going to be the head office of the University, before opening the courses at other States.
Instead, the alleged attempt to arrest the members of DESAM by conducting alleged search drive at houses and offices will not help in bringing any positive solution but will rather transform the issue into a bigger mess, the press statement added.
Apart from serving ultimatum, memorandums including the demand of the people with regard to the University have also been submitted to the Prime Minister, Sports Minister, Governor of the State and CM N Biren.
A meeting of intellectuals, sports lovers and students' unions was also held on May 27 but the State Government has not taken up any positive action, it stated.
The failure of the Govt to give a response following the ultimatum submitted on May 31 and the failure to meet the Registrar of the university, despite repeated effort enraged the members of the union which led to the unfortunate incident of yesterday, it claimed.
The union also apologized to the public for the incident.
It further warned that the union is ready to launch democratic form of agitation unless the Govt takes a responsible decision and press the authority concerned to stop the attempt to open major courses of the university at the outlying campus of Lucknow and the interview to be held on June 11 for appointment of teachers for the said courses.
It also warned other associations/organisations not to tarnish the movement of DESAM.
The University will be the turning point for numerous sports players in Manipur and its purpose will be useless if the varsity is only built only for namesake.
