Imphal, October 31 2021:
The Demand Committee on Upgradation of MBBS Seats (DCUMS) has asked the State Government to increase the undergraduate medical seats from this year.
Speaking to media persons in this regard at the Manipur Press Club, secretary of DCUMS, Johnson Kamei said the number of medical seats (MBBS) was not increased last academic session (2020-21) despite assurances from the Government side.
Acting on a PIL, the High Court of Manipur had also directed the State Government to add 50 more seats to the existing 100 seats at JNIMS from 2021-22 session without fail, he noted.
Moreover, the Chief Minister announced that Churachandpur Medical College will start functioning shortly with an intake capacity of 100 medical students on multiple occasions, he added.
He further said that during 2017-2019, Centre had sanctioned funds worth Rs 56.37 crore including an excess amount of Rs 2.37 crore with which Churachandpur District Hospital was upgraded to a Medical College.
The stagnation in hiking the number of seats despite the fund received and the directive of the High Court of Manipur, is a big disappointment, he rued.
The existing number of medical seats in the State is not only hugely disproportionate but there is also a wide gap between the existing number of doctors and the doctors the State actually requires.
Besides this, a number of aspirants, despite getting high marks in successive qualifying examinations (NEET), have gone into depression and careers of many have been lost due to shortage of seats, he said.
Considering the career of many aspirants/students and for overall development in the health sector, the State Government should ensure Churachandpur Medical College starts its academic session with due approval from National Medical Commission (NMC) and assure 100 seats at Churachandpur Medical College and another 50 seats at JNIMS from the 2021-22 academic session as promised, he appealed.
