Imphal, October 31 2012:
Bishnupur District Hospital scripted a milestone when it successfully performed a caesarian section for the first time today.
Significantly, Bishnupur District Hospital is the second such Govt hospital, outside Imphal, in the State that has facilities for CS after Churachandpur district hospital.
A Caesarian Section was successfully performed on Konthoujam (O) Sija (19) w/o Konthoujam Premjit of Thamnapokpi village in Bishnupur district today.
A 2.7 kg baby boy was delivered through the operation.
The CS operation was performed by a team of Gynaecologists including Dr A Wangol Leima, Dr H Babychand, Dr A Russia and Dr Homendro.
Dr Th Premchand, Medical Superintendent of Bishnupur District Hospital, said the district hospital could not perform the operation due to lack of infrastructure, equipment and manpower although the need was felt since long.
He said CS is now possible in the hospital with adequate providence of infrastructure, equipment and manpower by the Government or through schemes like NRHM and RKS.
As a referral unit, ideally there should be adequate infrastructure and manpower support for CS, blood bank and treatment facilities for infant post delivery at every district hospital, Dr Premchand said.
Absence of technician at OT, lack of staff nurses, improvement of hospital building, lack of adequate equipment and absence of blood bank are the impeding factors still at Bishnupur district hospital, according to Dr Premchand.
At least eight to ten cases that needed delivery through CS were referred to other better equipped hospitals every year from Bishnupur district hospital, said the MS.
