Mapithel Dam likely to be inaugurated within 20 days

After much waiting, Mapithel Dam also known as Thoubal Multipurpose Project may be inaugurated within 20 days.
Notably, a long span of 27 years had been consumed in finishing the project taken up above Thoubal river.
The project was started in 1989 after the Planning Commission, Government of India sanctioned Rs 47.25 crore in May 1980 .
The project is aimed at building 1120 meter long earth dam above Thoubal river, providing irrigation to 21862 hectares of cultivable land , providing potable water to Imphal areas and generating 5 megawatt of power to boost the power sector in the State.
As 99 percent works of the project had been completed, the newly formed BJP-led Government under the leadership of Chief Minister N Biren has been working to inaugurate the project as soon as possible.
Talking to this daily, IFCD Minister Letpao Haokip said that instruction has been given to all the concerned to inaugurate the project within 10-20 days.
He maintained that the project would provide potable water, electricity and irrigation to the people.
He informed that few works are yet to be completed.
Instruction has been given to Keystone Company, a private firm entrusted with the project implementation to complete the pending works mainly for canal at the earliest, he said.
Observing that the pending works could be completed soon as the-UNC-sponsored economic blockade on the National Highways had been lifted, the Minister assured that appropriate action will be taken up against the company if they fail to complete the project on time.
Commenting on new projects to be taken up by the State Government, he informed that Government of lndia has given 'in principle' approval fort akingup Chakpi Project.
The project may affect public properties and ecology as its" height measures 80 meter.
Therefore, there is a need to reduce' the height to minimise the losses, he admitted.
Asserting that the State would benefit much from the project, he said that support and cooperation from the people' are needed in taking up such an ambitious project.
Referring to the flood witnessed in the State due to the' incessant rain since the last few days, the IFCD Minister' assured that the Government will take up necessary steps to cope with the flood mainly in and around Imphal city.
He then informed that 1400 metric tonne of rice has been' kept for those who are taking shelter in relief camps due to the flood.
He added that the State Government is preparing to procure bamboo and other flood control materials by sanctioning an amount of Rs 2 crore.
