Imphal, September 27 2021:
The Working Committee of the Apunba Lup (WCAL) has demanded a high level inquiry against top civil and police officers as well as politicians on the death of Athuan Abonmai who was abducted from the venue of a high level outreach programme at Tamenglong on September 22 last by an independent agency.
A press release issued by WCAL stated that suspending certain security personnel as scapegoats will not do any good.
The Lup also asked the rationale of launching Go to Hills if the Government cannot protect the right to life of civilians in hill districts.
Saying that the former president of Zeliangrong Baudi former was abducted right in front of security personnel and was killed subsequently by armed miscreants, the WCAL expressed suspicion of a high level conspiracy behind the killing.
Among all the fundamental rights entitled to individuals, the right to life is regarded the most important and to promote this the United Nations took many resolutions, the statement continued and reminded that there are codes for treating even prisoners of war.
However, security forces in Manipur and other North East States are constantly killing, torturing and defiling many women while certain armed groups are kidnapping and killing civilians for ransom, WCAL claimed and urged both the State and non-State actors to stop crime against humanity and respect the international human rights law/humanitarian law.
The WCAL will endorse all the democratic movements of the JAC Against the Brutal Killing of Athuan Abonmai in demanding justice for the deceased.
The All Manipur Youth Protection Committee and All India Tanzeem-e-Insaaf (AITI), Manipur State Council too condemned the cold blooded murder of Abonmai and urged the Government to book the perpetrators.
