Imphal, January 24 2023:
The Directorate of Family Welfare Services, PC and P & DP Cell in coordination with State Health Society, NHM observed National Girl Child Day-2023 at TG Higher Secondary School, here, onTuesday.
The observance function was attended by NHM Manipur director Khoirom Sasheekumar as chief guest and director (family welfare) Dr Lalthari Hmar as president while SAA, PC and P & PD chairman Dr Oinam Sanahanbi and TG School retired principal Sangita Ayekpam were present as guests of honour.
Speaking at the event, Sasheekumar informed that 945 female babies are born for every 1000 male babies in Manipur and the ever-increasing male-female child birth gap will not be good for the state in future.
Number of females must be more than males for a progressive society, he stressed while pointing out Manipuri society conducts rituals for progress and prosperity since time immemorial but it would be impossible to bring prosperity when female population decreases.
The director also said that law & order is very much related with sex ratio as there will be violence when population of girls and boys is not balanced.
According to Sasheekumar, trafficking of women and girls occurs in north Indian states like Punjab and Haryana and also in Arab countries as female population dips significantly.
Human trafficking for profit is a big crime and sex ratio is the origin of this crime, he explained, and cautioned that Manipur too is figuring periodically in the human trafficking map.
He maintained that keeping sex ratio balanced is essential for keeping a society peaceful and developed.
While reminding that misuse of technology would degrade the society, Sasheekumar pointed out that widespread use of ultrasound machine throughout the world began from early 1960s and this machine meant for humanity service reached Manipur too.
However, this useful machine is now being misused to detect gender before birth and abortion of female fetus, he added.
