Sit-in-protests decry arbitrary arrest

Imphal, October 23 2012:
Tension gripped in Sekmai bazaar today over the arrest of a youth by a combined team of 43rd Assam Rifles and Imphal West commandos on the alleged charge of KCP (MC) member on October 22 at around 7.30 morning.
The arrested youth is identified as Kh.
Jayenta (30) s/o Kh.
Tamphajao Singh of Sekmai Makha Leikai.
A.Shanti, president of Advance Women Society stated that Jayenta is a mobile shopkeeper and was arrested by the security forces from his shop and later handed over to Sekmai Police Station on October 22 morning at around 10 .
While informing that Jayenta is a civilian, she further demanded to release him unconditionally.
Meanwhile, a sit-in-protest was staged today at Sekmai bazaar in protest against the arrest of the youth.
There, a Joint Action Committee christened as JAC Against The Arrest of Jayenta was also formed.
The JAC along with the Advance Women Society has threatened that it will take up various agitations if police do not release Jayenta soon.
On the other hand, local residents, mostly women of Tera Sapam Leirak in Imphal West staged dharna today demanding the state Government to release one Lairenjam Sanjit who has been allegedly arrested by police on the charges of being a member of the banned PREPAK-Pro, a faction of the People's Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak.
The 38-year-old UG suspect was reportedly nabbed by a team of Imphal West police commando from his residence at Tera Sapam Leirak on October 20.The police had claimed to have recovered a hand grenade from his possession.
The demonstrators rejected the police claim that Sanjit, also known as Khamba was arrested for being a PREPAK-Pro member and demanded he be released soon without imposing any condition.
They said Sanjit works as sweeper at Imphal Municipal Council (IMC) and he is not a UG as claimed by the Imphal West district police.
