Imphal, August 21 2012:
Even after thousands of Northeasterners fled from some of the southern States after being targeted and a Manipuri student was reportedly killed, the Government of Manipur still fails to take up adequate actions to ensure the security of its people, Joint Students' Co-ordination Committee (JSCC), a conglomeration of various student associations, has alleged.
JSCC also pointed out the need of the Ministers from the state to visit the Southern States like Karnataka, Maharashtra and Andhra Pradesh where northeasterners including Manipuris have been targeted.
Addressing media persons at the head office of AMSU, L Umakanta, Convener of JSCC, said that many people from the North East, students as well as working professionals, have been forced to leave southern cities like Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad following violence against Northeasterners.
To cap it all, a student from Manipur was reportedly thrown out of a moving train and killed recently.
Under such circumstances, the State government should leave no stone unturned to ensure the safety and security of its people.
Unfortunately, the state government seems to put in less effort than required.
Just sending some state officials in these states is not enough.
The Ministers should also be sent there to take stock of the prevailing situation and take up necessary remedial measures, Umakanta said.
Th Suresh, one of the members of JSCC, who was also present during the press conference, pointed out that even though North East people from Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad are said to have been evacuated through arrangement of special trains, no security has been provided to them in the trains.
He also said that the people of Manipur who are stranded in Guwahati should be brought back safely and the helplines open in Guwahati need to be broadened.
The people should be informed of the realities happening in the southern states.
Wungnaoshang, delegate of Tankhul Katamnaolong Shaklong, who also attended the press conference, said that the killing of a Manipuri student by throwing down from a moving training was really disheartening.
The authority concerned needs to take up appropriate actions so that such incidents do not occur in future and the lives of North East students are safeguarded.
The press conference was also attended by members of Kuki Students Organisation, Pangal Students' Organisation and Zeliangrong Students' Union, Manipur.
