Imphal, November 19 2017:
Ex-Chief Minister Okram Ibobi has stated that it were former Prime Ministers and Congress leaders Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi which preserved the integrity of India and Manipur.
Today too, Congress stands firm for the integrity of the country and the State, asserted Ibobi while addressing a concluding function of year-long Quami Ekta celebration at Congress Bhavan here today.
The Quami Ekta celebrated was extended for one year in commemoration of Indira's Gandhi 100th birth anniversary.
Ibobi stated that Indira Gandhi was a courageous Prime Minister who was also counted as one of the world leaders.
It was during the prime ministership of Indira Gandhi that all the North Eastern States were upgraded to the status of full fledged States and she always stood firm for the integrity of Manipur.
No other Indian leader had adopted such a firm stand as adopted by Indira Gandhi for the integrity of the country, Ibobi asserted.
During a public rally, Indira Gandhi once said that she might die but the bloods which oozed from her body shall consolidate the integrity of the country, and Congress workers should never forget these words, Ibobi said.
When the Mizo Accord was signed, the Mizo militants demanded Churachandpur district to form a greater Mizoram but their demand was rejected by both Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi and thus they safeguarded the integrity of Manipur.
Congress party may or may not be in power but it would always stand firm for the integrity of India and Manipur, Ibobi added.
The function was attended by MPCC president TN Haokip, MPs Dr T Meinya, Thangso Baite, Congress MLAs and many leaders of the party.
Earlier, the gathering led by TN Haokip paid floral tributes to a portrait of Indira Gandhi.
