Sudip Chakravarti's 'Highway 39 : Journeys Through a Fractured Land' released

A new book, Highway 39 : Journeys Through a Fractured Land authored by Sudeep Chakravarti and published by Harper Collins was released today at the seminar hall of Economics Department, Manipur University.
The book gives a detail account of the socio-political complexities and ethnic divisions prevalent in the North East region as one travels from Numaligarh in Assam to Moreh in Moreh along NH 2 (erstwhile NH 39) .
The book is divided into 31 chapters.
Before writing this book, the author travelled along the highway and talked with several UG leaders, human right activists, bureaucrats, army and police officers.
The book also made elaborate studies on insurgency movement in Assam, insurgent activities in Manipur as well as the ongoing political dialogue between the Government of India and NSCN-IM.
Excesses committed by security forces under Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act, Sharmila's fast unto death crusade against AFSPA, the Malom massacre and June 18 mass movement are also mentioned prominently.
It further makes a comprehensive study of the prolonged blockade imposed by ANSAM on NH 2 .
Manipur University VC Prof HNK Sharma remarked that the book was a very interesting one.
In the course of the book release function, an interactive session was held between students and teachers of Manipur University with author Sudeep Chakravarti.
The book release function was jointly organised by the Centre for Manipur Studies and Harper Collins.
