Imphal, December 01 2015:
Residents of Sanjenbam under Lamlai AC of Imphal East district have been left without proper drinking water supply for decades.
The Sangai Express came across people of Sanjenbam situated just about nine kilometres from Imphal reeling under acute shortage of various basic needs.
General secretary of Sanjenbam Khunou Development Club, L Umakanta said that people of the area are yet to get piped water.
A water supply scheme was constructed some three/ four years back in the area.
However, water is yet to trickle from the pipes of the water supply scheme due to reason best known to the authority concerned, he said.
Sadly, the pipes of the water supply scheme have not reached every nook and corner of the four localities of Sanjenbam, he said.
The residents, who are mostly farmers, are engaged in the distressing exercise of buying water for drinking and cooking purposes from private suppliers.
Besides, locals sometimes rely on ponds for drinking purpose, Umakanta said.
Adviser of the Club, M Pahari said that there is only one aided high school in Sanjenbam area.
The approach road to Sanjenbam, popularly known as Baruni road, is in a highly dilapidated condition.
The road, which is frequented by pilgrims who go to Baruni Hills, was black-topped some three/four years back.
However, no repair work has been taken up since then, he said while urging the authority concerned to take necessary measures to improve the road.
The Primary Health Sub-Centre at the locality fails to cater the medical need of the people due to alleged irregularity of nurses posted there, he said.
Pradhan of Takhel Gram Panchayat Thokchom Priyo Devi urged the authority concerned to look into the grievances of the public of the area and do the needful at the earliest.
Double cropping cannot be practised in large tract of agriculture land of the area due to lack of irrigation facility, the pradhan said.
