Mom dies, three ill after eating wild mushroom

Senapati, June 14 2021: A mother has died after consuming wild mushroom even as three members of the family are undergoing treatment at the District Hospital, Senapati.

The incident happened at Khongdei Ngawar village under Senapati district.

Four of the family ate the dish of mushroom brought by the father from forest on June 10.Esther (40) w/o Wantson Khullak of Khongdei Ngawar died on June 13 around 11 am few hours after she complained of abdominal pain, vomiting and had loose motion.

The symptoms reportedly developed after 7 am on June 9 after consuming the mushroom dish during dinner the previous day.

Two elder daughters of the family reportedly had no symptoms as they did not consume the mushroom that day.

All 4 members of the family reportedly had similar symptoms on June 13 and had acute loose motion.

With the PHC allotted for Khongdei areas non-functional and with no doctors present when the incident happened, other relatives were reportedly sent to get some medicines from PHC, Oinam Hill after consulting doctors present there.

However, the wife passed away before the medicines could reach on Sunday (June 13) .

The relatives then took the 3 other members of the family including the father and a 10-year-old son to District Hospital, Senapati.

They reached the hospital around 7:30 pm on Sunday.

Wantson Khullak, aged about 45 years, and two of his children Catherine (14) and Gladson (10) are presently undergoing treatment at the district hospital.

Had the PHC in their area been functional, his wife would have been safe, Wantson lamented.

Earlier, the Poumai Naga frontal organisations found that PHC, Khongdei was not functional and the health centre was without medical equipment.

There were no doctor and the construction of the office building and the barrack type quarter is yet to be completed during their last inspection to the PHC.

The deceased mother was reported to be an ASHA worker of the village.

The doctors in the district hospital said that the cause of the death could be food poisoning from the mushroom dish as shown by the symptoms of the patients.

The severe effect of the symptoms of the mother could have caused death with low BP while other members of the family are reportedly recovering in the hospital.
