Philately exhibition cum awareness camp held

A philately exhibition was organised in the auditorium of CRPF Group Centre, Langjing, Imphal today on the occasion of Philately Day under National postal week celebrations in Manipur.
Inaugurating the exhibition DIG Vikram Sahgal said that the postage stamp has assumed additional functions nowadays.
He explained that it is a mode of commemorating, celebrating and promoting national heritage, events and as a brand image of a Postal Administration and a statement of sovereignty of a nation.
Speaking at the occasion, Vinod Kumar, Director (Posts) Manipur described stamps as a "Token of Postage" and as "Cultural Ambassador" and wonderful medium of spreading awareness among the young generation.
He said that in addition to a thumbnail history of postal system, many unique stamps are displayed here including scented stamps spreading fragrance of sandal wood, roses and jasmine while a special stamp in Braille is also displayed.
According to a statement, children can see special covers signed by former president Dr APJ Kalam and various army generals which were put on display.
Homeshwari told students that there are mainly two categories of stamps.
Definitive stamps, which are meant for day-to-day use as a token of payment of postage on mail articles.
They are printed in large quantities over longer periods and can be printed repeatedly.
The second, commemorative are manufactured in limited quantities and generated great interest among philatelists and collectors.
A letter writing competition was also held among the children of Kendriya Vidyalaya-2, Langjing.
She declared that the winners of this competition will get a chance to participate in national competition.
On the other hand, special counters have been opened for CRPF in the hall.
Jawans and families briefed about the provisions of Postal Life Insurance and savings schemes especially about Sukanya Samrishi Yojana under which 9.2% rate of interest is being given which is calculated compounded annually.
Tekin Singh, ASP explained about PMBY and PMJJY while H Gandhi explained the features of the social security schemes.
Students were seen attracted towards "My Stamp" service available there, to get their personalized stamps with her/his photo.
Homeshwari told that these personalized stamps with one's photo can be used for sending mail besides keeping them as a souvenir of sweet memories.
