Flood hits fish production for Ningol Chakkouba fest

Owing to the flood caused by heavy rainfall this year, a target has been set to produce only only 85,000 kg of indigenous fish for this year’s Ningol Chakkouba festival as compared to 89,700 kg in last year’s edition .
Talking to The Sangai Express, an official of the Fisheries Department, Lamphelpat said that the reduction in fish production for this year’s Ninghol Chakkouba, the biggest festival of the State is due to the massive destruction caused to the fish farms in the flood and as such only 85,000 kg of indigenous fish would be produced in the Fish Fair Cum Fish Crop Competition to be held at Hapta Kangjeibung on October 20 .
He said that a target has been set to produce only 2000 kg of Pengba in the competition as compared to 3000 kg in last year.
He also said that only 1,500 kg of Ngaton would be produced in the competition for this year .
He mentioned that the Department after consulting with the concerned officials would try to provide adequate fish nets to fish farmers to accelerate fish production in the State .
In last year’s edition of the Fish Fair Cum Fish Crop Competition, per kg of rohu fish (below 2 kg) was sold at Rs 180 and Rs 200 (above 2 kg), common carp at Rs 160 (below 2 kg) and Rs 200 (above 2 kg), grass carp at Rs 160 (below 2 kg) and Rs 200 (above 2 kg), silver carp at Rs 160 (below 2 kg) and Rs 200 (above 2 kg) and per kg of Ngaton and Pengba was sold at Rs 650, he said .
Announcing that price of all the indigenous fishes to be made available in the competition will be increased by Rs 10 per kg considering the massive losses incurred in the flood, the official informed that the price list fixed by the Government would be declared on October 13 .
