Drivers of All Manipur Road Transport Drivers and Motor Workers Union temporarily ceased work today after the security personnel posted at Tadubi police station under Senapati district police allegedly thrashed some truckers.
According to a source, the security personnel at Tadubi police station had demanded Rs 100 to 200 from the trucks travelling to Imphal along National Highway.
The security personnel allegedly thrashed some of the truckers, after they refused to give the money.
The enraged drivers of around 200 trucks decided to launch a no steering wheel protest immediately, it stated.
The drivers ultimately lifted their protest and resumed their journey to Imphal after a team led by the Union's general secretary Maimom Anil rushed to the place and reached an understanding with the police.
Senapati Additional SP, SDPO, Senapati District Drivers Welfare Union, Surface Transport Hill Areas Welfare Union and the president as well as secretary of Mao Students Union also took part in the meeting, it added.
The Additional SP assured that proper action would be taken against the guilty security personnel and no entry would be necessary at Senapati and Tadubi police check gate.
The Union would submit a memorandum to the Home Minister and DGP regarding the incident, it added.
