Festival of Literature begins

A two-day festival of Literature 2012 jointly organised by Sahitya Akademi and Manipur State Kala Akademi got underway from today at Jawaharlal Nehru Manipur Dance Academy auditorium.
Presenting the key-note address, Akademi secretary S Vedeshwar Sharma said literary figures from other States, such as Karnataka, West bengal and Jammu & Kashmir would be sharing their expertise on diverse characteristics of the subject.
Expressing confidence that interaction with the literary figures from outside would not only provide the participants the opportunity to understand ethos and language of one another but also help further develop literary works, Vedeshwar conveyed that efforts would be made to increase number of non-local participants in similar events in the future.
Expressing that inclusion of Manipuri Language in the 8th Schedule should be followed by concrete measures to expand and popularise the same in diverse fields, the secretary said the main agenda of accommodating literary personalities from Tangkhul, Mao and Paite communities is to facilitate further development of the tribal languages/dialects.
As a guest of honour, former Akademi secretary Dr Kh Sorojini Devi suggested that along with organising such festivals, department concerned should ensure adequate fund provision to facilitate development of the State Kala akademi.
Festival Committee chairman N Kunjamohan Singh, in his address, conveyed that the Festival of Literature is being organised to promote and spread indigenous languages of Manipur.
As a part of the Festival a symposium on 'Tribal Literatures of Manipur: An Overview' was also organised under the chairmanship of Dr H Kamkhenthang.
As resource persons, Ch Chiphang, SK Hokey and M Nguldoukhup respectively deliberated on aspects of Tangkhul, Mao and Paite literatures.
during the poetry reading session held under the chairmanship of renowned theatre personality Ratan Thiyam, Nabaneeta Dev Sen, Abdur Rahman, Kh Anandini, S Tahir ali, dilip Mayengbam, Lanchenba Meetei, Birendrajit Naorem, Raghu Leishangthem, Mufidun Nisha and Saratchand Thiyam presented their respective creative works.
