WSFM vows to campaign

World Social Forum, Manipur (WSFM) has vowed to campaign for protection of environment and forests at the International level.
WSFM chairman L Sotinkumar said that the decision for carrying out the mass campaign was taken during an awareness programme organised as part of the 65th Vanmahotsav celebration held at Santipur Sanjenbam on Tinsid Road on July 7 .
The participants of the awareness programme pledged to develop Manipur as a green State for which efforts would be put in collective effort with schools, colleges, local clubs and organisations etc, he added.
Contending that WSFM would work towards developing eco-tourism Sotinkumar said that the Forum would take major role in promoting the historical places of Manipur at International level.
He also added that the participants also resolved to protect the indigenous plants of Manipur.
The gathering resolved to demand removal of small hills of valley areas from the jurisdictional map of hill districts, taking up of developmental activities at these small hills, prohibition of construction of houses and buildings in agriculture lands, prohibition of jhum cultivation in the hills of Manipur, bringing back of wetlands and lakes to its original shape, developing water bodies and protection of Loktak Lake, Sotinkumar said.
He added that the gathering also demanded MLAs and MPs to put in fund in environment protection and afforestation.
Sotinkumar also urged the public to extend support in holding campaigns in Myanmar, Thailand, Combodia, Laos, Vietnam and China.
