Guv for overhauling school administration in State

Ukhrul, November 09, 2013: Governor Dr Ashwani Kumar on Saturday stressed on the need to overhaul school administration in Manipur and outlined the importance of introducing a system of school administration and adopting an alternative method of running a school on Public Private Partnership (PPP) model.

In his address as the chief guest of Diamond Jubilee Celebration of Sacred Heart Higher Secondary School (SHHSS), Dr.Ashwani said that there are many good government schools but better schools are managed by missionaries.

"Let us adopt a system of school administration and alternative administration of schools on PPP model," he told the congregation comprising of various dignitaries, who are also alumni, and students.

The Governor thanked the Christian missionaries for taking the education in Manipur far ahead and nurturing better society.

"School education in Manipur has been literally revolutionised by Christian missionaries...This school (SHHSS) reflects dedicated and selfless service of teachers and educationists in the state," he lauded.

Dr.Ashwani felt Ukhrul is very lucky as missionaries came earlier and introduced school education, while probably hinting on that the district is the first in the hill areas to receive Western education.

Governor Dr.Ashwani was accompanied by first lady Chandan A Kumar, who also lit up the function with her cheerfulness as she is always in public.

However, Lok Sabha MP and former Chief Minister Dr.Rishang Keishing could not attend the celebration in person but his address as guest of honour of the function was read out in absentia.

Archbishop of Manipur Rev.Dominic Lumon DD graced the programme as the functional president.

To mark the occasion, the Governor unveiled the monolith of SHHSS diamond jubilee in presence of Principal Secretary (PWD) Ram Muivah, Chief Security Commissioner SZ Samuel, ICAR Director SV Dr.Ngachan and Rev.Fr Shaji Sebastian, the school principal.

He also unfurled the flag and released the jubilee souvenir.

A symbolic release of balloon and dove on the occasion was done by Rev.Joseph Mittathany, Archbishop Emeritus of Imphal.

SHHSS jubilee celebration was held amidst pomp and gaiety with glittering performances of music, skits, dances and cultural items by students.

Hundreds of students and their parents attended the grand celebration.

The Governor was so impressed with the way the programme was organised in the school premises.

However, the media persons were given a cold shoulder treatment by the organisers as no seat were reserved or arranged and have to stay in the sun throughout the session.

Some prominent alumni including Ram Muivah, Dr.Ngachan, SZ Samuel, retired ZEO Ukhrul John F Khavangpam also shared their past experiences and recalled their days in the school.

Among the guests also included Deputy Commissioner Dr.Shailesh Kumar Chourasia and Superintendent of Police K Kabib.

Mention made be made that SHHSS, a premier educational institution in Ukhrul, was started in 1953 in the month of November and has produced many prominent citizens over the years.
