Gaikhangam calls for unity among people

Deputy Chief Minister Gaikhangam, who is also the President of Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC), has made a clarion call to the people to stand united for the State and the country.
He was speaking as Chief Guest of the 71st Anniversary of Quit India Movement organized by Manipur Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) at Congress Bhavan here today.
Gaikhangam exhorted the people to safeguard the integrity of the country in honour of supreme sacrifices made by the freedom fighters against the British rulers.
The Quit India Movement was a civil disobedience movement launched in August, 1942 in response to Mahatma Gandhi's call for 'Satyagraha'.
All India Congress Committee proclaimed a mass protest demanding an orderly withdrawal of British from India.
About 60,000 people were imprisoned while 10,000 people laid down their lives during the movement, he recalled.
Deputy Chief Minister also hoisted the tri-colour national flag and paid floral tribute to Mahatma Gandhi, Jawaharlal Nehru and other freedom fighters.
The Congress workers led by President of MPCC Gaikhangam further took an oath to safeguard the integrity of the country regardless of caste, religion and race.
