Workshop on Korean studies begins at Manipur University

Imphal, November 08 2019: For the first time, a two-day 'Korean Studies Workshop for Indian Educators in North-East India' kicked off at the Court Hall of Manipur University today.

Understanding and exploring the growing importance of economic and cultural ties between India and South Korea, with special focus on Manipur in the North-Eastern region, the workshop is being hosted by the Department of Foreign Language (Korean), Manipur University.

Professor Ch Yashawanta Singh, Dean of School of Humanities, Prof Hyun Kyung Lee, visiting Professor, Korea Foundation, Department of Foreign Language (Korean), MU, Choi Jong Ho, Minister, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, Kim Kump Yong, Director, Korean Culture Centre, India, Prof Vaishana Narang of JNU, and Dr SJ Nithiranjan, Regional Director, Indira Gandhi National Open University, Regional Centre, Imphal attended the event as dignitaries.

Speaking at the event, Professor Hyun Kyung Lee highlighted the significance of the overall understanding of Korea, its language, culture and socio-economic developments.

Choi Jong Ho, Minister, Embassy of the Republic of Korea, appreciated the efforts and enthusiasm among the people of Manipur in accepting and exploring Korean culture.

Expressing that understanding each other's culture would bring a closer tie, he hoped for introduction of various regular Korean courses in Manipur University.

Director of the Korean Culture Centre, India, Kim Kump Yong addressed the historical ties, dating back to 200 years, between India and Korea.

And the religious connect, he said '23 percent' of Korean population still follow Buddhism and they search for spirituality in India.

The racial familiarity between the North-East Indian and Korean add all the more to the stronger ties.

He also promised to further strengthen the ties between South Korea and North-East region during his tenure as the Director of Korean Culture Centre, India.

Prof Vaishana Narang and Dr SJ Nithiranjan also talked about the need to introduce Korean language in universities across India, and its growing need in the service sector.

Ten students of Department of Foreign Language (Korean Language Course) were awarded scholarship by the Shinhan Bank.

'Fan dance' by the students of Department of Foreign Language (Korean) marked the event.

Dr Ahanthem Romita Devi, Assistant Professor, Dept Of Foreign Language (Korean), MU also attended the event.
