Government plans to widen all roads

As part of the steps being taken up to widen all important roads in the State starting right from the Highways, the State Government has sent a proposal for upgradation of Jiribam-Churachandpur Road to the centre for approval, Works Minister Dr Kh Ratankumar has informed.
The Minister was speaking as Chief Guest of the foundation stone laying ceremony for a RCC Bridge which is to be constructed over Khuga River to connect Lamjangphai and Thingchom in Churachandpur district today.
The Minister said that the State Government is planning to improve the condition of the roads in the State, both in the hills and the plains along with widening them to facilitate connectivity.
The road widening process will start from the National Highways to make it 100 feet wide in the residential areas and 150 feet along the stretch of non-residential areas.
Stating that widening of the roads is to be taken up in the interest and welfare of the people, Works Minister Kh Ratankumar observed that along with the increase in population, the need to widen the roads has become essential.

He also appealed to all concerned not to construct houses on khasland located along both sides of the NHs as they will be dismantled for road widening.
The people should give cooperation to the government in taking up such developmental works, he added.
The Works Minister further informed that a project proposal for construction of a 200-km long road connecting Jiribam and Churachandpur upto Behiyang has been forwarded to the Central Government for its proposal.
Another road connecting Tupul and Bishnupur and from Thoubal to Kashom Khulen in Ukhrul district will also be constructed under the External Aided Project of Asian Development Bank.
He also assured that the RCC Bridge whose foundation stone was laid today will be completed in three years' time.
Ram Muivah, Principal Secretary (Works), who was present on the occasion, stated that the RCC Bridge, which is to be constructed over Khuga River to connect Lamjangphai and Thingchom in Churachandpur district will be taken up under SPA at an estimated cost of Rs 3.68 crores.
The length of the bridge will be 44 metres and the breadth 8.40 metres.
With the construction of the bridge, the distance covered while travelling from Lamjangphai and Thingchom in Churachandpur district will be shortened by 17 kms, which otherwise is 20 kms.
Presided over MLA TN Haokip, the stone lying function was also attended by various top officials of the Works Department.
After the function, Works Minister Kh Ratankumar inspected the condition of Churachandpur-Sugnu Road, which is presently under construction.
The Ministerial team also inspected the construction works on the Mini Secretariat building at Churachandpur.
