Construction of parking lot at Moirang Kangla opposed

Locals of Moirang Constituency under the aegis of Senior Citizens for Society, Moirang Kendra held a public meeting at Moirang Yumkhaibam Mandap today decrying the construction of a parking lot by demolishing the historical site of Moirang Kangla.
The people also inspected the historical site prior to the public meeting.
Talking to media persons on the sidelines of the inspection, Executive Member of Moirang Thangjing Yageiren Marup K Mohonchandra said that 59 Kings had ruled at Moirang Kangla since time immemorial.
The site was also the King's Palace, he noted.
He further pointed that there is a cave inside the Moirang Kangla where the Coronation Ceremony of the King was held, and added that the King had administered the land from this Palace.
Several social organizations had even submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister on May 2, 2006 urging him to preserve the rare historical artefacts inside this old Palace.
However, the Government has remained silent despite serving several reminders, the Executive Member stated.
The meeting was also attended by President of Senior Citizens for Society N Binoy, Joint Secretary of Senior Citizens for Society Col K Achouba, retired IAS officer P Saratchandra, CPI leader Dr M Nara and other members of social organizations.
The meeting condemned the construction of parking lot at the historical site of Moirang Kangla and demanded the authorities concerned to preserve the site as a historical monument.
