Kangpokpi, June 03 2019:
Barak River, which is considered the largest fresh water river in the State, claimed three lives on May 29, rendering six siblings orphans.
The tragic incident occurred when Manglengou Singson and his wife Lhaikholhing Singson, along with their eldest daughter, Themngailhing Singson were picking snails from the river.
The couple hailed from Kaimai village, under Tousem Sub Division in Tamenglong district, and had seven children (including their eldest daughter who also perished along with them in the river).
It is reported that the deceased couple family's main livelihood depended on selling river snails which they usually collected from Barak river.
As usual, Manglengou Singson went to the river for a routine gathering/picking on May 29 and his wife and their eldest daughter went along with him to the river.
However, later that day, a group of snail pickers from the same village saw the lifeless body of the mother floating in the river but the father and their eldest daughter were missing.
Subsequently, a search party was formed immediately and their bodies were found after two days, on May 31.The minors left behind are identified as Nemneivah Singson (12), Nemjemkim Singson (10), Lhingthanghoi Singson (8), Lalmunsang Singson (5) and twins Chongngaihoi Singson and Chongngaisang Singson (both around 2 years old).
On the other hand, condemnation poured in from many people condemning the alleged irresponsible act of the State Government in remaining a silent spectator so far.
Kuki Khanglai Lawmpi (KKL) Jiribam Branch under the aegis of KKL-GHQs has launched crowd funding in various social media groups for the children of the deceased family.
