Tunkhopum Baite's statue unveiled

The statue of late Tunkhopum Baite, the principal figure behind the Chin National Liberation movement in the late 70s was unveiled today at Lamka Community Hall, Churachandpur fulfilling the dying wishes of the few surviving men who had followed him through thick and thin, our correspondent reports.
ZRO president Thanglianpau Guite formally unveiled the white statue at about 10.30 am today.
Rev Dr Pumzathang Tombing, one of the late Nationalists' followers dedicated the vent.
The handful of CNLA cadres who survived the movement paid fitting tributes to the late leader.
Zomi Nationalist leaders, politicians, CSOs and hundreds of people witnessed the unveiling of the statue today.
A formal ceremony to mark the unveiling ceremony was conducted soon after at YPA GHqs hall.
The ceremony was addressed by ZRO president Thanglianpau and Rev Dr Pumzathang, among others.
Speaking at the occasion Dr Pumzathang Tombing said the vision of the late leader is very much alive among the people.
He further expressed confidence that the dream espoused by General Tunkhopum Baite of unifying the Zo-descendants from the rivers of Brahmaputra to Chindwin will one day be fulfilled.
Dr Tombing, during his speech said he has forgiven the Mizo National Front (MNF) which is allegedly responsible for the killing of General Tunkhopum Baite.
He also called upon the gathering to do the same, claiming that the slaying of Baite was a mistake.
