Imphal, May 31 2011:
Rainfall and few customers have compelled vendors to abandon their seats at the recently shifted open market at Lamphel and had to go to offices and individual houses to sell their wares.
As part of the government plan to reduce traffic congestion in the city area, unlicensed vendors in Khwairamband were evicted and given spaces at an open place near the Lamphel super market.
Despite strong protests and demands for allotment of seats at the upper floor of the three multi-storey women's markets, the government had finally evicted them.
Till today streets vendors are lamenting that the place provided by the government at Lamphel is not suitable and have been demanding an alternate place.
Vendors said that fare charges to reach Lamphel is too high and that it has made a negative impact on sale proceeds of the day.
The women vendors said they had days with no sale proceeds at all.
To cope with the deficit in profits, they have been forced to go from office to office during office hours to sale their wares.
A vendor said that with the advent of rains, they faced inconveniences as the makeshift stalls cannot stand up to the showers.
She added apart from this, only few customers come to buy goods.
People buy goods from them in pity, she asserted.
