Day 1 of 48 hrs UNC total bandh peaceful

The first day of the 48 hour total bandh called by the United Naga Council (UNC) in Naga inhabited areas of the State passed off peacefully.
Normal life was affected in Chandel district on the first day of the United Naga Council's 48 hrs total bandh, as vehicular movement came to a grinding halt.
The UNC called the 48 hr bandh in all Naga inhabited areas of the State from midnight of April 27 demanding intervention of the Government of India on its demand for Alternative Arrangement outside the Government of Manipur pending Indo-Naga political settlement.
In Chandel district, the bandh was enforced by volunteers of Chandel Naga People's Organization (CNPO) who blocked the Pallel-Machi road at Tuishimi, Chakpikarong road, Imphal-Moreh section of NH 102 at Lamkang Khunou and Chandel district headquarters road at Liwa Changning.
All the roads in the district including the Imphal-Moreh section of NH wore a deserted look as private and commercial vehicles stayed off the roads.
Shops and other Commercial establishments in the district headquarters also downed their shutters.
However, vehicles carrying patients, religious programmes and other emergency services were exempted from the purview of the bandh.
Education Minister and his team comprising 42 Tengnoupal A/C's MLA and SP Chandel coming from Imphal towards Moreh were also detained for a while by the bandh supporters at Lamkang Khunou along Imphal-Moreh section of the NH this morning.
At Ukhrul headquarters, the bandh was effective as vehicles stayed off the road and Govt offices wore a deserted look.
Ukhrul markets remained totally shut.
Mapithel dam affected villagers also strongly enforced the bandh at their areas.
Bandh supporters also blocked some medical teams and staff of PHED for a while at some points.
However, they were allowed free passage later.
Many vehicles were also blocked at Mahadeva.
However, no untoward incident has been reported so far.
At the same time, TNL president Weapon Zimik has appealed to all concerned to extend fullest cooperation make the bandh a successful one.
The 48 hours total bandh also affected normal life in Senapati district.
Business centres in various parts of Senapati district remained closed.
Many trucks carrying essential goods are reported to be stranded at Khuzuma in Nagaland.
Most of the shops in Mao remained closed and all business activities came to a halt.
Reports received from Mao Gate, Tadubi, Maram and Senapati district headquarters said that the bandh was total at these areas, reports The Hornbill Express.
However, some travellers were seen walking on the deserted NH-2 with their luggage.
Except for school vehicles and other emergency services, all the vehicles were off the roads.
Till the time of filing this report, more than 60 trucks and buses were stranded near the border of Manipur and Nagaland at Mao Gate.
No untoward incident has been are reported so far.
