Media sensitization workshop

A two-day State level workshop on media sensitization for new vaccine induction in routine immunization was held at the conference hall of Family Welfare Department today.
The workshop was organized by State Health Society, Manipur.
Participants were imparted knowledge on pentavalent and inactivated polio vaccine, which is to be introduced in the State from October this year.
It is said that the new immunization method will reduce the number of injections administered to babies.
Earlier three injections were given to babies in the sixth week, tenth week and fourteenth week making a total of nine injections.
However, single injection would be administered under the new method, said K Rajo, Director of Family Welfare Services.
He further informed that the pentavalent vaccination would prevent babies from suffering from Diphtheria, Pertussis, Titanus, Hepatitis-B and Haemophilus Influenza which are fatal and some of them communicable.
Dr Th Nandakumar, State Nodal Officer of Immunization, speaking at the workshop said that polio vaccination is so effective if it is done before the baby turns six months.
Stating that there are three types of polios, he said that oral polio vaccination would continue till 2018 to eradicate it.
Polio Type-1 and Type-3 and Inactivated Polio vaccines would be administered through injection from October this year.
After 2018, oral polio immunization will be replaced by injection and it is widely practised in the developed countries.
Chief Medical Officers, District Family Welfare Officers, District Immunization officers, District Programme Managers, Extension Educators, Community Mobilisers, Vaccine and Cold Chain handlers etc were also present.
