Imphal, June 26 2021: Adhikarimayum Sarda Devi has become the first ever woman to become the president of a political party in the state after BJP national president JP Nadda appointed her as the successor to the state's former party president late S Tikendra on Saturday.

The appointment order issued by BJP general secretary and HQ in-charge Arun Singh was forwarded to chief minister N Biren and BJP Manipur Pradesh.

Meanwhile, responding to queries from the media, Sarda said that BJP is the only party that truly has the will and commitment towards empowerment of women.

No other party than BJP can improve the status of women in the society and her appointment as the party's state president is a testimony.

The party leadership entrusted her with the responsibility to steer the party through the forthcoming state assembly election and to emerge victorious.

She will put her best efforts to achieve the target of winning no less than 40 seats in the forthcoming assembly election as set by her predecessor S Tikendra, Sarda said.

The new state chief also said that she will always consult with party leaders and workers in taking any key decisions.

Recounting her journey into politics, Sarda said that she contested and won the Ward No 7 seat of Imphal Municipal Council in 1995, and this made her realise that the society cannot move forward without active participation of women in politics.

In the same year, she took charge of BJP National Mahila Morcha secretary and remained as vice-president of Mahila Morcha for several years and participated in various election campaigns alongside renowned party leaders including union minister Smriti Irani.

She also took major role in assembly elections of different states including in the northeast region as election in-charge.

She had also remained as secretary (administration) spokesperson, treasurer of BJP Manipur Pradesh and president of BJP Yuva Morcha.

She was vice-president of BJP Manipur Pradesh under the tenure of former president S Tikendra.

Meanwhile, BJP Lamlai Mandal has extended heartiest congratulations to Sarda Devi on her appointment as the new president of BJP Manipur Pradesh by BJP National president Jagat Prakash Nadda on Saturday.
